As is so often the case now under climate change, awful August gave way to warmer days again in September, as soon as the school had gone back (September was second warmest on record for the UK), before autumn could return again properly in October.
In the garden, flowers, fruit and veg all continued in abundance as we moved into this harvest festival and apple pressing season.

April was unusually warm and dry, ensuring Spring arrived with a vengeance, underlining the timeless wonder of it all.
At The Secret Acre it proved a busy month recycling, creating new borders, as well as cutting the grass, planting the potatoes, planting extra successional broad beans and onions, and bottling the last of the cider. Continue reading

Another quick update from the veg patch. Our onion and potato harvests were in recently.
The onions were most satisfying, because they are another of those vegetables that we never bothered growing before, when we were container growing in a small city backyard.
The potatoes were more of a relief. We had always grown a sack or two of potatoes in the backyard. A regular and reliable staple. But now, properly in the soil for the first time, they looked decidedly less healthy, and we were worried they had failed. Continue reading
