It’s been a difficult year for plants and wildlife suffering the stuck weather systems of climate change. A worry for the extremes to come.
Here at The Secret Acre, July and August were more like autumn, before a burst of summer heat in September, too late to stop the rot.
Nevertheless, our harvests continued as best they could.
The outdoor tomatoes all started to rot in the persistent cold and wet, necessitating a green tomato salvage operation. We had to pull all our potatoes early too, as they also rapidly wilted under the autumnal summer weather.Others struggled on to harvest as best they could, even those in the greenhouse struggling to find enough warmth to ripen-up.Just when it looked like the greenhouse tomatoes would never ripen, September’s burst of late summer sunshine just managed to do the trick.September’s late warmth also helped the squashes hold on a bit longer, but they too started wilting early under the stress, leading to a slightly undersized harvest compared to past years.
